State of the Standups 1985 • Seinfeld, Leno, Wright, Lewis, Klein

Weird Al and Mark Scheerer

• Who were the hot standup comics some thirty years ago? Glad you asked

• Thanks to ABC Radio News I got to pick their brains

• Sometimes I did things just for giggles

Jay Leno hadn’t taken over the Tonight Show desk. Seinfeld wasn’t yet a show about nothing. Robert Klein, now 76, was already the elder statesman. ABC sent me out to NY and LA comedy clubs to do this series of short takes on the hot standup comics of the Mid-’80s. Weird Al Yankovic was not one of them, but I don’t have any pictures with the others. (I think he was promoting a Michael Jackson parody which might explain my getup. Or not.)
